Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Geoffrey Ruku has unveiled a government plan to harmonise the operations of the National Youth Service (NYS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
The move is aimed at expanding opportunities for young people and strengthening skills development across the country.
Speaking during a church service at ACK Kiamiatu, Kega in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County, Ruku said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to equip Kenyan youth with practical skills that match labour market demands and support economic growth.
Creating Seamless Training Pathways
The CS said the harmonisation of NYS and TVET institutions will create a seamless pathway for young people to acquire technical skills, vocational training and hands-on experience.
According to Ruku, the government plans to transform NYS training centres into modern skills-development hubs that will work closely with TVET institutions to nurture a highly skilled workforce.
He revealed that plans are underway to expand NYS training facilities across the country to accommodate more youth seeking technical and vocational training opportunities.
“The government wants every young person willing to acquire skills to have an opportunity to do so. By strengthening the relationship between NYS and TVET institutions, we are creating a stronger foundation for employment and self-reliance,” said Ruku.
Tackling Youth Unemployment
The Cabinet Secretary said expanding training opportunities will help address youth unemployment while empowering young people to venture into entrepreneurship and innovation.
He reiterated that the Kenya Kwanza administration remains committed to investing in human capital development and youth empowerment as key pillars of economic transformation.
On disaster preparedness, Ruku warned that the country could experience heavy rains associated with the anticipated El Niño phenomenon.
He urged residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas to relocate to safer grounds and advised farmers with mature crops to harvest early to minimise possible losses.
Defence of Government Agenda
The CS defended President William Ruto’s frequent international engagements, saying the visits are strengthening Kenya’s global partnerships and attracting investment opportunities that will benefit citizens through development projects and job creation.
Ruku also criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying his departure from government should not be interpreted as a signal for residents of the Mt Kenya region to abandon the administration.
