Labour CS Alfred Mutua met with Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials on Tuesday, August 13, at his office in the NSSF Building in Nairobi to discuss the implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) on the backdrop of threats by teachers to strike ahead of school reopening in September.
Mutua stated that the purpose of the meeting was to find a consensus on various grievances raised by the teachers and highlighted the need for proactive steps to ensure industrial harmony.
“We must endeavor to arrest issues before they fester and lead to strikes. It is my desire to ensure comfort for both employees and employers, not only for industrial peace but also for enhanced productivity,” he said.
KNUT stated yesterday that its tutors will not return for the third term unless the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was fully implemented.

Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General of the union, mentioned that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) was yet to implement the second phase of the CBA.
“KNUT will continue to secure and maintain better terms of condition of service of teachers in this country, we will not leave you behind, we organized this AGM to tell teachers where issues are,” he said.
Additional issues raised encompass challenges with the teachers’ medical scheme, failure to remit SACCO and loan deductions and delays in retirement benefit payments.
The Union is also advocating for the permanent hiring of intern teachers and the recruitment of 20,000 more teachers to alleviate staffing shortages.
