Concerns have resurfaced at Kisii University following renewed allegations of a cartel involved in the illegal sale of academic transcripts, with students claiming the practice has returned stronger despite earlier interventions by the university administration.
Several students have reportedly raised complaints that they are being forced to rely on unofficial channels to access their academic performance, citing delays and unavailability of marks on the official student portal.
According to the students’ claims, individuals linked to the alleged cartel are charging between Ksh 150 and Ksh 250 per transcript, or approximately Ksh 100 per unit, to provide what they describe as “reliable” academic results.
Disturbingly, some students insist that the information obtained through these unofficial means is often accurate.
The situation has sparked fresh criticism of the university’s academic management systems, particularly the functionality of the student portal, which students say has failed to consistently display examination results in a timely manner.
This is not the first time such allegations have emerged.

Similar claims were previously reported, prompting the university leadership to pledge reforms and investigations into irregular access and unauthorized handling of academic records.
However, the latest complaints suggest that the problem may not have been fully resolved.
Students now say the continued gaps in the official system have created room for exploitation, forcing some of them into dependency on unauthorized intermediaries to track their academic progress.
Education stakeholders have raised concern that if left unchecked, the situation could undermine trust in institutional grading systems and compromise academic integrity.
As pressure mounts, students are calling on the university administration to urgently restore full functionality of the student portal, enhance transparency in results management, and take firm action against any individuals involved in the alleged cartel operations.
The university is yet to issue an official statement on the renewed allegations.
