Maseno School has emerged as the leading institution in the utilisation of resources, according to findings presented before a parliamentary committee scrutinising governance and financial management in the education sector.
The school was ranked first in resource utilisation, followed by Kanga High School and Sinyolo, placing them among institutions cited for their management of resources.
The findings were presented to the National Assembly Public Investments Committee on Governance and Education, chaired by Luanda MP Dick Maungu.
The committee examines reports and accounts of public investments and reports of the Auditor-General, including whether public investments under its mandate are being managed according to sound financial and business principles.
Maseno’s top ranking signals strong performance in the utilisation of resources, with the institution having invested in areas aimed at improving learning, infrastructure and co-curricular activities.
Kanga High School secured second position, while Sinyolo was ranked third in the resource utilisation assessment.
The committee’s scrutiny comes amid concerns over financial management in public learning institutions, including school borrowing, outstanding fee arrears, procurement practices and the distribution of learning materials.
Lawmakers have increasingly called for stronger accountability mechanisms to ensure funds allocated to learning institutions are utilised efficiently and deliver tangible benefits to learners.
The assessment is expected to put greater focus on institutions that demonstrate effective resource utilisation while prompting others to review their systems for planning, procurement and expenditure.
Focus on accountability
For Maseno School, the recognition adds to its profile as an institution combining academic performance, infrastructure development and administration.
The ranking of Kanga and Sinyolo also underscores the importance of sound resource management in strengthening the capacity of schools to deliver quality education.
The committee is expected to continue its oversight of public investments in the education sector as Parliament seeks to ensure that public resources are protected from wastage and mismanagement.
