A class eight girl was fatally shot by police last evening at Marimanti area in Tharaka South sub county, Tharaka Nithi county when the vehicle she was traveling in failed to stop after being flagged down by the security officers.
The police officers from Marimanti Police Station who were acting on a tip off that there was a vehicle ferrying aliens to an unknown destination shot at the vehicle when it defied the order to stop.
The 13-year-old girl is currently nursing gunshot injuries on the right thigh at Marimanti Level IV hospital.
The candidate was part of eight family members who were heading to Mitunguu in neighbouring Meru County from Nkondi when the Sienta vehicle they were traveling in was flagged down.
“The officers laid an improvised road block using stones. The driver was flagged but failed to stop by evading the roadblock prompting the officer to fire at the said vehicle three times,” read a police statement in part.
The girl was shot on the right thigh and rushed to Marimanti Level IV hospital where she is nursing injuries.
It was later established that the driver is a Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldier identified as Dennis Makembo.
The rest of the occupants escaped unhurt.
Police have already launched investigations over the incident.
