Some 250 youth from Tharaka-Nithi County have graduated after successfully completing a digital skills program called DigiTrack.

The event took place at Chuka Picnic Grounds, Tharaka-Nithi County.

The program has been underway since February 2026.

Tharaka Nithi is now the 41st County to benefit, with more than 10,000 people benefiting nationally.

The program aims to equip young people with practical competencies in ICT, online work, digital entrepreneurship, cybersecurity and e-learning.

Huawei Technologies Kenya, through a strategic partnership with local authorities and grassroots stakeholders, said the initiative aims to bridge the gap.

Ole Moke Hillary, Director of Blue Economy and Fisheries, who represented the PS State Department of Blue Economy and Fisheries, Betty Njagi said the digital hubs have also been initiated in partnership with Huawei.

Director of Blue Economy and Fisheries Hillary Ole Moke speaks during a press briefing on Monday as 250 youths graduate in Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County.

Ole Moke said the government will help equip the hubs with more computers to ensure that many benefit from the initiative.

Digital age

He said the youth should use the skills positively, as the digital age is about using Artificial Intelligence and digital skills.

“They should use the technology and use it to empower themselves to gain jobs globally. Nowadays, even people in the banking sector use their phones to withdraw money without going to the bank, so ethical hacking, cybersecurity, and password management are very important. We urge the youth to use them to get opportunities even abroad in the UK and the USA, using laptops and computers,” he said.

Ole Moke said such skills will help Kenya compete globally.

Yuta Leng, Public Affairs Director, Huawei Kenya, said as a company, they started the initiative as a corporate social responsibility (CSR), believing there is no need to leave anyone behind in the digital training, a reason why they train all age groups in 47 counties and will hold a big graduation in Kisumu by the end of the year.

Allan Munene, a beneficiary, said they have realised that digital skills can help the youth get jobs.

He said that after acquiring the skill, he was able to be employed as a secretary because he could operate a computer.

“Youth should be assisted to get laptops, and they will manoeuvre through getting online and marketing themselves using their skills,” Munene said.

Munene urged the youth to use the internet in a way that will benefit them.

Martin Mbogo, the head of communication in the PS State Department of Blue Economy and Fisheries, said that he had helped several youths who are paid by YouTube and TikTok use his PayPal account.

“I have someone earning about 100 dollars per week, which is a lot of money just for making social media content. I challenge the youth to stop complaining that there is no work yet, social media pages are paying,” Mbogo said.
