Parents Association wants gov’t to cut school fees

National Parents Association Chairman Nicholas Maiyo now wants the government to reduce schools for the second term.
He says this is because students have stayed home for over one week due to elections.

“As parents, we call upon the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof George Magoha to reduce fees for the second term. The second term should be 13 weeks but the Covid-19 reduced it to 9, and the elections have slashed another week. Therefore, fees must be reduced,” Maiyo told the press in Eldoret town.

He said the alternative was for the government to add a week or two to the period, warning principals against overcharging parents in these hard economic times.

“It’s sad that despite the Ministry of Education reducing the national schools fees, 60 per cent were still asking parents to pay 53,000 shillings. This is uncalled for and any parent having a fees structure of 53,000 should forward it to us to take stern actions against them,” he added.

Maiyo further called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to look at alternatives for conduct of elections in the future, saying it disrupted school programmes.

“We are asking the IEBC not to use schools in future for their activities. There are TVET centres, churches, and town halls among other facilities to prevent interruption of normal learning,” Maiyo added.
