KNUT calls for urgent road safety measures on Narok

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called for urgent measures to improve safety along the Narok–Bomet Highway.
The union cited a rise in accidents involving teachers, learners and other road users.
KNUT also urged stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved road infrastructure to prevent further fatalities.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called for stronger road safety measures along the Narok–Bomet Highway following an increase in accidents involving teachers, learners and other road users.

Addressing a press briefing in Mulot, Narok KNUT Chairperson Newton Koech said urgent action was needed to prevent further loss of lives.

“The situation on the Narok–Bomet Highway has reached alarming levels. Every stakeholder must act now to stop these avoidable accidents,” Koech said.

Koech said road safety should be viewed as a shared responsibility rather than the work of traffic police alone.

“Road safety begins with individual responsibility. Every driver must obey traffic rules, and every institution must support efforts aimed at protecting lives,” he said.

Koech accused some motorists of repeatedly violating traffic regulations through reckless overtaking at accident-prone sections of the highway.

“We continue to witness dangerous overtaking at black spots despite repeated warnings. Such behaviour is irresponsible and must stop,” he said.

Call for stricter enforcement

The union leader also challenged traffic police officers to enforce the law without compromise.

“There are concerns that corruption is undermining enforcement. Officers must uphold professionalism and ensure traffic offenders are held accountable,” he said.

Koech urged teachers to participate in road safety awareness programmes and appealed to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to install clear road signs and other safety features along the highway.
