4,500 university students from Mwala sub county, Machakos county will benefit from bursaries worth Ksh 52 million.
This was disclosed by area Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Musau after meeting the students during a verification exercise.
The lawmaker said that he received 6,000 applications but 1,500 students were found to come from outside the sub county.
“This is the highest number of applications in the constituency ever. We have done the sorting to ensure students from the sub county benefit where we arrived at 4,500 verified applications,” he said.
Musau noted that he introduced an online bursary application to weed out cons.
He explained that after launching the digital bursary application the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) was able to save Ksh 8 million.
“We set up a digital system because we realized people who come up with non-existent schools and send hundreds of students to apply for bursary. These people are now cornered thus they can’t get through,” he noted.
He warned that those who are involved in such suspicious activities will soon be banned from accessing bursaries.
