Passengers onboard the MV UVUVI boat on Sunday night escaped death narrowly after the boat they were travelling in hit a rock on the Indian Ocean near the Lamu port area.
They included 35 students from various high schools who were returning to school from their villages in Ndahu Island, Kiwayu Island and Makkoni Island, along with five other people.
According to Kenya Red Cross officer Lamu Abdul Hakim Abdu, the passengers were stranded for three hours before the Red Cross officers arrived to rescue them.
Reports indicate that the boat struck a hidden rock beneath the water’s surface, causing the boat’s engine to fail and leaving them stranded in the open waters.
