Authorities in Athi River East Sub-County, Machakos County, are investigating a tragic incident in which a 14-year-old Grade 9 learner died after falling from a school building.
According to police reports, the student allegedly fell from the third floor of a classroom block through a stair grill last week.
The exact circumstances leading to the fall remain unclear as investigators piece together evidence from the scene.
Police officers who responded to the incident established that the learner sustained severe head injuries, including a suspected skull fracture, accompanied by heavy bleeding.
He was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to assess his condition.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers from Embakasi were later deployed to the school, where they documented and processed the scene.
They also revisited key areas within the building as part of ongoing efforts to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the fatal fall.
Family notified
The body was subsequently moved to Kenyatta University Funeral Home pending a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police confirmed that the next of kin were notified and later arrived at the school upon receiving news of the incident.
Grief and shock gripped the institution as the tragedy unfolded, with parents and guardians flocking to the school in large numbers after learning of the death.
Witness accounts and preliminary observations suggest confusion and panic at the scene as school administrators and security personnel attempted to manage the situation.
Investigators have since commenced a comprehensive probe to determine whether the fall was accidental or if other factors may have contributed.
