For close to a year, the family of a 13-year old girl has been living in pain, grief, and disbelief.
Vera Anyango, Standard Eight pupil at Kanyadgiro Primary School in Kamwango Sub-Location, Rongo Sub-County started experiencing breast enlargement in January this year.
The enlargement later turned abnormal quickly growing to itchy symptoms that later developed into painful open wounds.
Presently, Anyango is living with her grandmother at Kanyasrega sub-location and fears the imminent fate of her academic life as the government contemplates on January reopening.
The family of Anyango is currently reeling in abject poverty clinging to a financially better neighbor who has been facilitating her hospital visits.
However, Anyango who is scheduled to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education at the reopening of the learning institutions calls for immediate medical help from the well-wishers.
“I don’t feel comfortable going to school or playing with my agemates because they do not consider me as one of them. They look at me differently mocking me for the breast that has grown to the bottom of my belly,” Anyango told Education News.
Her grandmother Mrs. Susan Oroko now pleads with area leaders and other well-wishers to come to their aid and assist in facilitating Anyango’s hospital bills.
Speaking to Education News, Mrs. Aroko said that they first visited Rongo District Hospital then Homabay County Referral Hospital, and finally Oasis Specialist Hospital where Anyango was scanned and the results of a growing tumor on her breast were found.
“We have visited several hospitals around in search of medication but all in vain, her health instead of improving, is deteriorating”, said Mrs. Aroko.
In their last visit to Homabay Hospital, they were advised to visit Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital or Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for further medication but their finance status has made it a tall order.
