The State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has partnered with Foundation Builders International, Kenya (FBII-K), and the American Welding Society to strengthen advanced welding skills and improve industry-oriented training in the country.
The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Principal Secretary for TVET Dr Esther Thaara Muoria, paving the way for enhanced practical training, professional certification and enterprise development.

Under the agreement, the partners will focus on training trainers, strengthening competency-based instruction and developing Kenyan master trainers who can equip young people with specialised skills in welding, metal fabrication and electrical installation.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between technical training and industry demands by ensuring that graduates acquire practical competencies needed in the workplace and for self-employment.
The partnership also aligns with the government's industrialisation agenda and efforts to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions as centres for producing a skilled workforce.
With major industrial projects expected to create demand for specialised technical expertise, the initiative aims to position Kenyan youth to benefit from emerging employment and business opportunities.
Among the projects highlighted is the proposed Dangote refinery in Lamu, which could create opportunities for skilled workers and enterprises in areas such as fabrication, welding and electrical installation.

The collaboration will be implemented through existing TVET institutions, allowing the partners to monitor progress, evaluate outcomes and expand successful training programmes sustainably.
Through the partnership, the State Department for TVET seeks to strengthen the capacity of local trainers and improve access to industry-relevant skills, helping prepare young Kenyans for opportunities in the country's growing industrial sector.
