The Western Region Junior School Championships wrapped up emphatically, producing a new crop of champions who will represent the zone at the National Junior School Championships set for August 2, 2026, in Thika, Kiambu County. The three-day event showcased the depth of talent across Kakamega, Bungoma and Busia counties, with each producing winners in different disciplines to secure their ticket to the national stage.
Kakamega County stamped its authority on the regional contest, clinching five titles across football, volleyball and handball. Mumias Central Junior powered their way to the boys’ football crown, while Hill School proved unstoppable in the girls’ category. In volleyball, Ikoli Junior and Khaunga emerged as champions in the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively, while Mayoyo Junior capped Kakamega’s dominance by lifting the boys’ handball trophy.
Bungoma County also made its mark, particularly in girls’ competitions. Mukuyuni stormed to victory in netball, Kimilili FYM claimed the girls’ handball title, and Savana dazzled in basketball to secure the regional crown. The strong showing underscored Bungoma’s growing reputation as a hub for girls’ sports.

Busia County completed the list of winners with decisive performances in boys’ categories. Masebule triumphed in netball, while Nambale outclassed rivals to clinch the boys’ basketball championship. Their victories ensured Busia’s presence at the national games, adding balance to the Western Region’s representation.
With Western Kenya long regarded as one of the country’s most competitive sporting zones, expectations are high that the region’s champions will mount a serious challenge for national honours in Thika. The teams now turn their focus to preparing for the showdown against the best from other regions, with hopes of extending their dominance beyond the regional stage.
