The principal of Utumishi Girls Academy has publicly spoken for the first time since the tragic dormitory fire that claimed the lives of students at the school, describing the incident as painful and difficult to understand.

Speaking during the burial of one of the victims, Nicole Mitchelle Muiruri, in Embu County, Principal Joycelyn Karanja said the school community was still struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss.

The Principal said that the fire may have been secretly planned, saying the tragedy had robbed families and the nation of bright and ambitious young girls with promising futures.

“This is something that was done in secret. I want to say that this is very painful. I have lost daughters who had bright futures, dreams, and a strong sense of purpose,” she said.

The principal described the deceased learners as disciplined and hardworking students, noting that some were the only children in their families.
