Thousands of students admitted to the University of Nairobi (UoN) for the 2026/2027 academic year can finally breathe a sigh of relief after the institution officially released admission letters and joining instructions, ending weeks of anxiety among learners and parents across the country.
The announcement comes after several public universities had already issued admission documents following the release of placement results by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). The delay at UoN had sparked widespread concern, with many students questioning when they would receive the crucial documents needed to prepare for university life.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, the university confirmed that all admission letters for students placed through KUCCPS had been successfully processed and uploaded. It further announced that the first semester of the 2026/2027 academic year will officially commence on August 24, 2026, when first‑year students are expected to report for orientation and registration.
For many families, admission to the University of Nairobi represents years of sacrifice, hard work, and academic excellence. The release of admission letters marks the beginning of an important transition for thousands of young Kenyans moving from secondary school to higher education.

How Students Can Access Their Admission Letters
The university has informed all successful applicants that SMS notifications containing their registration numbers have already been sent to their registered mobile phone numbers. Students are required to log into the Student Management Information System (SMIS) portal using the registration number as the username and their KCSE index number as the default password.
Once logged in, students should download their admission letters and joining instructions before completing the online registration process. The university has also directed students to upload all required documents electronically to facilitate a smooth admission process before reporting physically to campus. This digital approach is part of UoN’s broader strategy of embracing technology to improve service delivery, reduce paperwork, and enhance efficiency in student administration.
Students Urged to Apply for HELB Loans and Scholarships
Besides downloading admission documents, UoN has encouraged all admitted students to immediately apply for funding through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and the Government Scholarship Programme under the Higher Education Funding model.
University education remains expensive for many Kenyan households, making financial assistance a critical component in ensuring deserving students access quality higher education regardless of their economic background. Stakeholders have urged students not to wait until reporting day before applying for financial support, warning that delays in applications may affect fee payments and other essential academic processes.

Inter‑University Transfer Window Still Open
The release of admission letters coincides with the opening of UoN’s inter‑institution transfer window. Students placed in other universities through KUCCPS but wishing to pursue their studies at UoN have until August 9, 2026, to submit transfer applications. The transfer opportunity allows eligible students to change institutions before the commencement of learning, provided they meet the admission requirements for their preferred programmes.
