University students appeal for financial boost

University students in Uasin Gishu County have asked the Ministry of Education to consider giving them grants.

Speaking to the press in Eldoret, University student’s leader Mwangi Njiru said this would help cushion them from effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Parents have been badly hit by the effects of Covid-19 and most of them cannot even afford rent. How do you expect such a parent to pay fees for their children? We need a HELB grant from the Ministry,” he said.

Njiru said a special grant disbursed under the Higher Education Loans Board would go a long way in helping students pay fees and meet other expenses.

Njiru asked county governments and the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to also consider offering financial support to university, college and technical institution students who have resumed learning.

He also urged university students to obey Ministry of Health protocols for the prevention of the spread of Covid-19.
