Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Director for the Western region, Audrey Odhiambo, has called upon new trainers in the industry to uphold high levels of integrity in the course of their work.
Speaking during an induction session for new trainers at Kisumu National Polytechnic, Odhiambo said the trainers are expected to uphold high work ethics among the students entrusted to their guidance. She specifically warned trainers against making sexual advances towards their students.
“The law specifically protects such students from sexual advances from their superiors,” she said.
Odhiambo called upon the new trainers to obey the rules and regulations set out by the Ministry, and urged them to form linkages with industry players in order to advance their own professional growth. She said such linkages would provide trainers with hands-on exposure and keep them adaptive to changing industry needs and emerging trends.
“The exposure ensures that the private sector is actively involved in training so that learners graduate with the skills and experience that employers actually require,” she said.

Odhiambo added that the government is currently developing a curriculum that will enable both students and trainers to acquire skills while working within the industry. She noted that TVET training remains vital as it allows industry players to train students according to their specific needs.
She explained that the new curriculum adopts a 75 per cent workplace and 25 per cent classroom training model, representing a significant shift in how young people are prepared for the labour market by integrating employers directly into the training process.

Kisumu National Polytechnic Chief Principal Dr Wycliffe Okumu, while welcoming the new trainers, urged them to remain disciplined. He said the trainers must give their best to students while also advancing themselves professionally, adding that the government means well for the TVET sector and encouraged trainers to take advantage of the opportunities available.
