Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions have been urged to register in the National Qualifications Database (NQD) to enhance the credibility, recognition, and verification of qualifications awarded to graduates.

The call was made by Dr Alice Kande, CEO of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority, during the quarterly leadership meeting of the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI), which brought together education sector leaders to discuss strategies for strengthening Kenya’s TVET sector.

The meeting was attended by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, Principal Secretary for TVET Esther Muoria, chief executive officers of TVET state agencies, principals of institutions, and council chairpersons.

Dr. Kande highlighted the mandate of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority and outlined progress made in implementing the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF). She emphasized that training institutions play a critical role in ensuring the quality and recognition of qualifications and urged them to enroll in the National Qualifications Database.

According to Dr. Kande, registration in the NQD will strengthen the credibility of qualifications, simplify verification processes, and facilitate the mobility of graduates seeking employment opportunities both within Kenya and abroad.

During the meeting, CS Ogamba emphasized the need for industry-based training that equips learners with practical skills demanded by employers.

On her part, Dr. Muoria called on TVET leaders to remain focused on producing competent and industry-ready graduates through sound governance, innovation, and accountability.

The engagement forms part of ongoing stakeholder consultations by the State Department for TVET aimed at strengthening collaboration among institutions, improving service delivery, and enhancing the quality of technical training across the country.

The meeting, officially opened by CS Ogamba at the Kenya School of TVET, was hosted by the institution’s CEO, Edwin Tarno.

Participants reviewed progress made in implementing the TVET transformation agenda, with discussions focusing on the rollout of Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), strengthening industry linkages through dual training models, and expanding partnerships with industry players.

Education stakeholders noted that the reforms are intended to position Kenya’s TVET sector as a key driver of economic growth by producing a skilled workforce capable of competing effectively in both local and international labour markets.
