  • The shortage of qualified teachers in the technical subjects has been one of the major challenges facing schools implementing the CBE curriculum.
  • The integration of TVET trainers is set to boost teaching strength in senior schools, ensuring students on the STEM pathway receive quality instruction.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has initiated the process of onboarding trainers from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to bridge the shortage of teachers handling technical subjects in Senior Secondary Schools.

The move is aimed at supporting the rollout of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum, which has introduced a wide range of specialised technical and vocational learning areas at the senior school level.

Education officials said the ministry is working closely with the TVET sector to deploy qualified trainers with the technical expertise required to teach the new subjects, many of which have experienced staffing gaps since the transition to senior secondary education.

Some of the technical subjects offered under the senior school curriculum include Marine and Fisheries Technology, Aviation, Metalwork, Power Mechanics and Building Construction, among others. The shortage of qualified teachers in these specialized areas has been one of the major challenges facing schools implementing the new curriculum.

The onboarding of TVET trainers is expected to strengthen teaching capacity in senior schools and ensure learners pursuing the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway receive quality instruction from professionals with practical industry experience.

The initiative also highlights the growing collaboration between the basic education and TVET sectors as the government seeks to align education with labour market demands and equip learners with practical, employable skills.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, saying it will ease pressure on schools and improve the implementation of technical subjects across the country while enhancing the quality of competency-based learning.
