- TSC will introduce a free online Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme to strengthen teachers’ competencies.
- Completion of the five-year TPD cycle will be linked to the renewal of teachers’ practising licences.
- The Commission says the programme will improve curriculum delivery, mentorship and teacher mobility.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to continuous teacher capacity building through the rollout of a revamped Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme.
Speaking on Thursday, June 25, 2026, TSC Acting Chief Executive Officer Evaleen Mitei said the new TPD framework has been improved and is now ready for implementation.
Free and largely online
Mitei said the programme will primarily be delivered online through a Learning Management System currently being developed by the Commission, with only a few face-to-face sessions.
She emphasized that teachers will not be required to pay for the programme.
“We will not charge any money for TPD. But there is a catch. TPD is aimed at improving your competences as a teacher. Just like all other professions, the teaching service must be licensed,” Mitei said.
Linked to licence renewal
According to the Acting CEO, successful completion of the five-year TPD cycle will be linked to the renewal of teachers’ practising licences.
She explained that the move is intended to professionalize the teaching service and align it with other regulated professions.
Mitei noted that the Commission has also developed a Teacher Mobility Policy to support teachers seeking employment abroad.
She observed that many Kenyan teachers encounter difficulties when seeking international teaching opportunities because Kenya has not previously operated a teacher licensing renewal system.
“So, that five-year TPD will lead to your renewal of your teaching licence just like any other profession. Lawyers and other professionals do it. We are equally professionalizing the teaching service,” she said.
Mitei said the new Learning Management System will enable teachers to access various learning modules under the TPD programme with ease.
She encouraged both teachers and school administrators to embrace the programme, noting that its hybrid approach will strengthen classroom management, instructional delivery and school leadership.
The programme is expected to help teachers respond effectively to emerging educational trends, technological advancements, changing learner needs and evolving education policies.
“TPD will equip teachers with the knowledge, skills and pedagogical approaches required to effectively deliver the curriculum and assess learner competencies,” she said.
She added that strengthening teacher capacity would improve classroom practice and enhance learners’ educational experiences.
Strengthening mentorship
Mitei also said the Commission has enhanced the Teacher Induction, Mentorship and Coaching (TIMEC) programme as part of broader education reforms.
She noted that the initiative will support newly recruited teachers while providing continuous guidance and professional support to experienced educators.
According to the Acting CEO, mentorship and coaching encourage professional growth, promote the sharing of best practices and improve teacher confidence and performance.
