- TSC has also unveiled13 award categories to recognise outstanding teachers during the October 5 World Teachers’ Day celebrations at Kasarani Gymnasium.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will host simultaneous marathon races in eight cities on Sunday, September 27, kicking off celebrations for its 60th anniversary.
Dubbed “The Teachers Run,” the event will take place at all eight TSC regional headquarters, namely Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, Embu, Kakamega, Kisumu, Mombasa and Garissa.
The Commission has opened up participation to teachers, education stakeholders and the general public, welcoming both runners and walkers to take part. According to TSC, the event is meant to bring communities together in appreciation of teachers, regardless of whether participants aim to compete or simply show support by walking the course.
The marathon forms part of a broader lineup of activities leading up to the national World Teachers’ Day celebrations, set for October 5 at the Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi. TSC has called on corporate partners, stakeholders and well-wishers to back these build-up events, noting that the marathon also doubles as a fundraiser ahead of the main celebrations.

The October 5 event will also serve as a platform for recognising teachers whose work has left a measurable mark on teaching and learning. This year’s World Teachers’ Day awards span 13 categories, among them Lifetime Achievement, Early Years Educator, Sustainable Development Educator, Early Career Educator, School Leadership Excellence, Inclusive Educator and Child Protection Champion.
Other categories include Co-curricular and Talent Development, Teacher Mentor, Innovation and ICT Integration in Teaching, Most Resilient Teacher, as well as National Honours and International Recognition awards.
Eligible nominees include both serving and retired registered teachers who have made a demonstrable difference in recognised institutions, with judges placing emphasis on dedication, innovation, leadership, inclusivity, resilience and measurable impact.

This year’s build-up activities, including the marathon, are anchored on the theme “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” a nod to the Commission’s six-decade journey in safeguarding the welfare of Kenya’s teaching workforce.
