A police officer who was escorting KCSE exam papers to Mahero Secondary School in Alego Usonga Sub-county was killed and his two firearms stolen this morning.

The officer was together with his other colleague and an exam supervisor when they were attacked by unknown people at around 7.55am.

According to eye witnesses led by Joachim Kombo, the officers had just alighted from a school bus that had ferried them and exam papers from Siaya County headquarters.

They were walking to the exam centre when they met two men who descended on them with crude weapons, hacking the officer to death and leaving the other one with serious injuries.

The bus could not reach the school due to the bad state of the road.

During the attack, the exam supervisor luckily managed to escape into a nearby homestead with the papers as the unknown assailants snatched the officers’ firearms and took off.

Siaya County Commissioner Julius Otieno and the County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo led the security team that visited the scene and took the injured officer to Siaya County Referral Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

Confirming the incident, Otieno called for patience as investigations into the matter begin to establish who the attackers were and what their motives could be. He appealed to members of the public to volunteer information that could lead to their arrest.

The KCSE Geography Paper I went on successfully as the Siaya Deputy County Commissioner Robert Ng’etich assured that security will be intensified to ensure all the remaining papers are done uninterrupted.
