- A five-year-old boy died after a house caught fire at Boronyo village in Kisii.
- Neighbours rushed to the scene after an alarm was raised but could not rescue him.
- Police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
A five-year-old boy was burnt beyond recognition after a house caught fire at Boronyo village in Kiogoro Division, Kisii Central Sub-County.
According to his grandfather, Akagayo Byanari, who works as a security guard in Kisii town, he usually leaves the minor in the house as his siblings leave for school so that the boy can open the door for him when he returns from work.
On this day, the grandfather delayed, and a fire believed to have originated from a gas cooker engulfed the house, resulting in the boy’s death.
A neighbour who identified herself as Rhoda Ratemo said she sensed danger and screamed to alert villagers, who rushed to the scene, but it was too late to rescue the boy.
They informed police, who removed the body from the scene and took it to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for preservation as investigations into the cause of the fire began.
Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui identified the deceased as Emmanuel Omonyi of Boronyo Sub-location in Nyaribari Chache Constituency.
Kirui appealed to parents to be wary of possible accidents, including drowning, road accidents and fire outbreaks, and to protect their children from such dangers at all times.

He said fire accidents have devastating effects, including trauma, whenever they occur and called for extra caution when using gas cookers and other flammable appliances at home.
