Teachers have been urged to take a leading role in promoting peace, unity and social cohesion by engaging learners in sports and community development initiatives.

Speaking during the launch of the Kisii County Teachers Soccer Premier League at Kenyenya Teachers Training College, Kisii County Woman Representative aspirant Dolifine Bwari said teachers remain the country’s most influential agents of character formation and should use their position to nurture responsible, peace-loving citizens.

Addressing teachers drawn from across the county, Bwari said educators play a critical role in shaping learners from early childhood through higher education by instilling discipline, respect, teamwork and responsible citizenship.

She noted that in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), teachers introduce children to values such as sharing, discipline and cooperation through guided learning and play.

At the primary school level, she said, teachers reinforce these values through sports, clubs and peer support programmes that keep learners engaged and away from conflict.

Bwari added that secondary school teachers help nurture critical thinking, leadership and mentorship while using co-curricular activities such as football, athletics and drama to channel youthful energy into positive and productive pursuits.

She said lecturers and teacher trainers in colleges and universities complete the education journey by preparing students to become responsible citizens, innovators and community leaders.

“When a teacher is present and engaged at every stage, the child learns that success is built on discipline, cooperation and respect for the community,” she said.

The event was attended by Kisii County Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Executive Secretary Abel Kenyanchui, as six teachers’ teams competed in the inaugural tournament.

Kenyanchui lauded Bwari for supporting teachers’ welfare and professional development, saying more leaders should partner with educators in initiatives that strengthen unity and teamwork within the profession.

To support the league, Bwari donated playing uniforms to all participating teams and pledged continued support for teachers’ sports and welfare programmes.

She said properly equipped teams promote discipline, teamwork and pride among participants.

Bwari also challenged teachers to seek elective leadership positions, arguing that greater representation in public office would ensure education issues receive adequate attention in policymaking.

“If teachers take leadership positions, education issues will no longer be an afterthought. You will be at the table where decisions on schools, bursaries and youth programmes are made,” she said.

She urged teachers to use the newly launched league as more than a sporting competition, saying it should serve as a platform for mentoring learners, resolving conflicts peacefully and demonstrating that healthy competition can thrive without hostility.

Bwari further encouraged teachers to work closely with parents and local leaders in community initiatives such as tree-planting campaigns, clean-up exercises and talent development programmes to strengthen the link between education and community service.

“The teacher is the first referee of life for our children. If we get it right from ECDE to university, we will raise a generation that chooses dialogue over violence and teamwork over division,” she said.

She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting teachers’ welfare and sports programmes if elected Kisii County Woman Representative.
