An investor has now ventured into manufacturing mobile laboratories to address the laboratory shortage crisis in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) within Embu county and its environs.
According to an officer, Leaky Kipkosgey from Science Laboratory Limited located in the county, the portable laboratory will ease the pressure off schools which have no capacity to build and equip a laboratory.
He said that the portable lab is equipped with a 13kg gas cylinder and an illumination lamp for lighting with one lab costing Ksh 45,000 and can accommodate eight to twelve students.
“This portable laboratory can be operated even in class or outside a classroom. With lack of enough capitation and facilities, this laboratory is an affordable remedy for such schools,” he said.
Further, Leakey regretted that students whose schools have no laboratory have to travel to neighbouring schools to perform practical lessons.
He urged schools in the county to embrace the mobile labs in schools as they are affordable and easily maintained.
Marina Njoki, the company manager, said they will work with the government through the Ministry of Education to ensure they equip all schools without laboratories.
