Nyamira Boys High School in Nyamira County was on Saturday night set ablaze by unknown people.

According to the School Principal Mr. George Onkundi, the incident took place when learners were in the classrooms for evening studies.

“My boys heard the alarms from the watchman and streamed out of their classrooms to put off the fire,” he said.

The principal added that the commotion during the incident attracted Boda-boda riders and villagers who came in to fight the fire and salvage belongings.

The school also called fire fighters from Nyamira town who reinforced the crowd on time to put off the fire that had already engulfed the dormitory with a student capacity of 250. The combined efforts contained the fire which had already consumed the stationery, bedding and other students’ belongings worth thousands of shillings.

“It was bad for the property to be destroyed but it would have been worse if our children were hurt, but the worst never happened,” commented one of the parents.

Nyamira County Police Commander Mr. Patrick Ngeiywa, was among the first people to report to the scene to help in efforts to fight the fire. He confirmed the incident and said that investigations on its cause had started.

“I cannot tell you the cause of the fire until we have completed the investigation which has just started,” he responded on phone call.

Mr. Ngeiywa appealed to the public to volunteer information to his office to assist them establish the truth about the ugly incident.

The school is the first one to burn in Nyamira County during the latest spate of school arsons across the country.
