Shock as Grade 8 girl commits suicide in Nyamira

The police in Nyamira are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Grade 8 school girl who is suspected to have committed suicide.

Her parents said the body of their 14 year- old daughter, Eunice Gesare of Omonono Primary school in Nyamira County, was found hanging from a tree on their compound.

The sad incident that occurred yesterday, July 22,stunned many villagers including the area chief who went to the home to confirm the strange incident.

Her mother said that her daughter looked jovial from the previous day and never showed any sign of irritation which could have led her to take her life.

The police later took the body to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem to Scertain cause of death.

The head teacher of her school, Joseph Rioba led his staff to the deceased’s home to console with the bereaved family.

He termed the deceased as a disciplined, keen and passionate athlete in both volleyball and soccer and wondered why she decided to take her life.

“She was one of our obedient pupils and reliable team player.” He said.

The girl’s death comes on the heels of consolidated efforts in Kisii and Nyamira counties to address the mental health issues by various workers and psychology experts.

Nyamira based pastor Ibrahim Ombuya attributed the rampant suicide cases in the region to private use of drugs by the youth and extensive influence that openly publicize social vices.

He appealed to parents, teachers and churches to intensify guidance and counselling to young people who are desperate and hopeless in life.
