President William Ruto has introduced Soma Play, a new digital platform designed to promote and support creative work produced by students across Kenya.
The system was unveiled at State House in Nairobi during the Kenya National Drama Festival State Concert. The President said the initiative is part of government efforts to strengthen the role of creative arts in education while also opening up new opportunities for learners.
Integrated into the eCitizen portal, Soma Play was demonstrated live during the launch, showing how schools can record, share, and earn from student‑created content. Officials explained that the platform will give young performers wider exposure while also creating financial opportunities for schools and learners.
“This platform will give schools a proper way to showcase their creative work and ensure that students benefit from their talents,” an official involved in the project said.

They added that accessibility was a key consideration in the design. “By placing Soma Play on eCitizen, we are making it easier for people everywhere to view and support student content.”
Funds generated through the platform will be managed by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), before being returned to schools. “The aim is to make sure that any income goes back to support learners and nurture their abilities,” the official explained.
The government believes Soma Play will not only give students a national stage for their creative work but also contribute to the wider economy by tapping into Kenya’s rich artistic talent.
Officials said the platform will help revitalise creative arts in schools, encourage innovation, and provide learners with a pathway to professional opportunities.
The government has ensured that Soma Play is accessible countrywide, allowing schools from every region to participate. The initiative is expected to democratise access to audiences and resources, bridging gaps between urban and rural schools in showcasing talent.
