President William Ruto has called on parents to take a more active role in raising and mentoring their children, arguing that the growing cases of indiscipline among learners point to a breakdown of guidance at the family level.
Speaking on Sunday during the annual Rhino Charge event in Wamba, the President said the responsibility of nurturing children cannot be left solely to schools, teachers, or the government.
He emphasized that strong values, discipline and character are first cultivated at home.
Ruto’s remarks come at a time when the country is grappling with a series of school fires reported during the current academic term, raising fresh concerns about student safety and discipline in learning institutions.
The most devastating incident occurred on May 28, 2026, at Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru county, where a midnight fire claimed the lives of 16 students.

The tragedy shocked the nation and prompted widespread calls for enhanced safety measures in boarding schools.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire broke out at around 1:00 a.m. while students were asleep in their dormitory.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with reports suggesting that the dormitory door may have been locked from the outside, a claim that has intensified public concern and scrutiny over safety procedures in schools.
The president noted that while government agencies continue to strengthen regulations and improve safety standards in educational institutions, parents must also play their part by instilling discipline, responsibility and moral values in their children.
His comments have sparked debate among education stakeholders, with some supporting the call for stronger parental involvement, while others argue that schools and education authorities must equally address systemic challenges affecting student welfare and discipline.
