- The tournament brings together 650 teams and more than 13,000 participants from across the county.
- Wavinya says the competition will promote talent development, health awareness, mentorship and grassroots football.
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti on Friday launched the fourth edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup, describing it as the biggest community sports enterprise in the region.
Speaking during the launch ceremony attended by ward coordinators from across the county, Governor Wavinya said the tournament had reignited a movement, bringing high-voltage energy to the grassroots.
She lauded the technical team for laying a solid foundation for the tournament, noting that selecting and shaping talent from more than 13,000 active participants had not been a walk in the park.
“The Governor’s Cup is not merely 90 minutes of play, it is total transformation,” said Wavinya.
Tournament targets holistic youth development
The Governor said the tournament goes beyond football to address holistic youth development, including mental health awareness and resilience, HIV counselling and testing, promotion of healthy living and career mentorship.
“We are nurturing the complete athlete – body, mind and soul,” she said.
Wavinya said her administration is building Machakos to become the premier sports incubator in East Africa.
“To all the 650 teams, the stadium lights are on, the ball is on your court – play fair. May the best team rise,” she declared.

She also thanked the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for bringing discipline to the game and partnering with the county to professionalise grassroots football.
