Jubilation erupted outside Rongo University as a section of students burst into song and dance after learning that former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and his two co-accused, Paul Oyamo and Caspal Obiero, had been found guilty of the murder of university student Sharon Otieno.
Students gathered at the university’s main gate, chanting justice songs and waving placards reading, “Justice for Sharon” and “No one is above the law.” Some danced in groups while others knelt in prayer, saying the ruling had given them closure after years of waiting.
Sharon Otieno, a student at Rongo University, was abducted and murdered in 2018 in a case that shocked the country. The High Court in Nairobi on Wednesday found Obado and his two co-accused guilty of her murder.
The court deferred sentencing to allow for the preparation of probation and victim impact reports. Both the prosecution and the defence are expected to present mitigation before the sentence is delivered.
Students said they would hold a candlelight vigil at the university on Friday evening in memory of Sharon.

Human rights groups in Migori also welcomed the ruling, saying it sends a strong message against gender-based violence.
