PS acknowledges SMEs’ vital role in youth innovation, productivity

The Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department of Industry in the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry Dr. Juma Mukhwana has acknowledged the crucial role of SMEs among the youth, fostering innovation, skill development, and increased productivity.

Speaking during the 24th graduation ceremony of Mount Kenya University (MKU), Dr. Mukhwana highlighted commended the university for equipping young individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge for market participation and international engagement.

The PS affirmed the government’s commitment to promoting collaborations between SMEs, academia, and the private sector, emphasizing skill development, technological advancements, and policies supporting research and innovation.

He cited the successful manifestation of this collaboration during the Covid-19 pandemic, where numerous innovations were developed and brought to market.

Dr. Mukhwana outlined challenges in the linkage between learning institutions and SMEs, including minimal technology absorption, inadequate skills crucial for growth, and the commercialization of innovative technologies.

Congratulating the graduates, he reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting education, research, innovation, infrastructural growth, and employment creation for socio-economic equality.

MKU Chancellor Prof. John Struthers highlighted the university’s Kwinta partnership, focusing on mass propagation of medicinal plants and conservation efforts.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi noted the institution’s record student enrollment, emphasizing MKU’s establishment of a niche and commitment to providing quality education.
