A total of 252 learners at Canon Awori Nambale A.C Secondary School in Busia County have undergone mentorship on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and adolescent life skills in a targeted sensitization exercise held ahead of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, set for Thursday, May 28, 2026.

The session also addressed what health officials described as the “Triple Threat” facing adolescents: HIV infections, early pregnancies, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in an integrated approach aimed at promoting awareness and behaviour change among learners.

The initiative underscored the growing recognition that menstrual health is closely linked to broader adolescent wellbeing, including dignity, safety, school retention, and access to education.

Health experts noted that combining menstrual hygiene education with discussions on HIV prevention and gender-based violence provides a more comprehensive approach to youth empowerment.

Officials said the intervention is part of ongoing efforts to promote menstrual health education, reduce stigma, and improve school attendance among girls, while also equipping learners with knowledge to prevent exploitation and abuse.

The sensitization comes as the county joins global campaigns marking World Menstrual Hygiene Day, which seeks to promote menstrual dignity and raise awareness on the importance of safe and informed menstrual health practices.

Further similar outreach programmes are expected to be rolled out in other schools across Busia County as part of sustained efforts to support adolescent health and wellbeing.

The programme was supported by the County Government of Busia in collaboration with KCB Bank, Busia branch, reflecting a multi-sectoral effort to strengthen adolescent health awareness in schools.
