More than 250 traders whose businesses were destroyed by a devastating fire at Machakos Mitumba Market have received KSh50,000 each from the County Government of Machakos to help them rebuild their livelihoods.

The affected families also received education bursary cheques to support children studying in schools and colleges.

While issuing the cheques at the market, Governor Wavinya Ndeti announced that reconstruction of the market would begin immediately.

She assured traders that each beneficiary would be allocated space at the same site once the redevelopment is complete.

“We are constructing modern shades fitted with fire extinguishers and a modern water point,” said Governor Wavinya.

She explained that the new market will feature raised metallic roofing, cabro-paved floors, walkways and three-metre-wide access lanes to improve movement and safety.

The Governor added that a solar-powered lighting system would be installed to enhance security, while display stands would be provided to improve merchandise presentation.

Support for traders

Governor Wavinya said the county government remained committed to helping affected traders recover quickly and resume their businesses.

She also criticised leaders whom she accused of politicising the tragedy instead of supporting recovery efforts.

The Governor maintained that management of markets falls under the County Government and urged leaders to support ongoing reconstruction efforts.
