St .Johns Nyamagwa Boys High School in Kisii County has been closed indefinitely. The closure came after fire broke on Tuesday evening and reduced one of the dormitories into ashes. The incident is suspected to have been coordinated by rogue students and an outsider.
According to the school’s administration, the cause of the fire could not be established immediately as learners were asleep when the incident occurred.
Speaking at the school on Wednesday, Kisii County Director of Eduction. Mr. Pius Ngoma said that the decision to close the school was reached after a lengthy consultation with the members school’s Board of Management.
“We decided to close the school temporarily to avoid any further damage pending investigations from the police,” he briefed.
The county director further revealed that 12 students, including the school watchman and one outsider had been arrested by the police from Itumbe station in connection with the fire and were helping them with investigations.
The Principal of the school said that 150 learners lost their property included bedding.
“We are happy that none of our students were hurt during the commotion although they lost property,” he said.
The principal regretted that the blaze occurred when students were busy settling with their studies and catch up with the compressed term’s work.
He appealed to parents to talk to their children when they are at home, to volunteer information that may lead to the arrest of more suspects.
Following the arson, the community has called for thorough investigations to arrest the suspects and arraign them in a court of law.
They condemned the burning that has recurred at the institution and called for cooperation to avert further incidences. The community recalled another incident two years ago that affected the student’s performance as it occurred when candidates were sitting for the examinations.
