A student from Nginyang’ Girls High School in Tiaty Constituency has died under tragic circumstances after reportedly failing to receive timely emergency treatment at Kabarnet County Referral Hospital. The incident has sparked outrage among residents and raised fresh concerns about the state of healthcare delivery in Baringo County.
According to accounts from the ambulance crew, the student had been admitted at Chemolingot Sub‑County Hospital for two days before her condition worsened. Doctors referred her to Kabarnet for specialized care, and she was transported by ambulance late in the evening. The crew reported arriving at the referral hospital at approximately 7:00 p.m., but claimed medical staff delayed attending to the patient, who remained inside the ambulance for about 35 minutes. She was pronounced dead at around 7:35 p.m.
The driver alleged that despite reaching the hospital’s emergency unit, staff repeatedly said they were busy. He further claimed that this was not an isolated case, noting that patients referred from Tiaty Constituency have previously experienced similar delays in accessing urgent care at the facility. These allegations, however, have not yet been independently verified.

The incident has provoked anger among residents, who are demanding accountability and a thorough investigation. Dorcas Cherotich, a resident, described the death as heartbreaking and called for those responsible to face consequences. “It is disheartening to lose a young student under such circumstances. We want a thorough investigation to establish exactly what happened and ensure those found responsible are held accountable,” she said.
Another resident, Chelangat Soy, insisted that if negligence is confirmed, disciplinary action must be taken against the staff on duty. She also urged that the hospital administration be held accountable if systemic failures contributed to the tragedy.
Community members have appealed to relevant authorities to conduct a prompt, impartial, and comprehensive investigation to determine whether proper emergency procedures were followed and whether lapses in patient care occurred. By the time of publication, neither Kabarnet County Referral Hospital nor the Baringo County Department of Health had issued an official statement.
The death has left the student’s family, fellow learners, teachers, and the wider Nginyang’ Girls High School community in mourning. Condolences have been extended to the bereaved family as they await the outcome of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the loss.
