Teachers seeking to own affordable homes will soon be able to pay for their units directly from their salaries under a new government arrangement announced by President William Ruto.

The President said the Affordable Housing Board was working with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to establish a check-off system that will allow teachers to finance their homes through salary deductions. Ruto made the announcement on Monday during the national World Teachers' Day celebrations at Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi.

He said the government had already committed to reserving 20 per cent of affordable housing units for teachers, an arrangement agreed upon in September 2025 when the Affordable Housing Board signed a deal with the Kenya National Union of Teachers and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers. Under the arrangement, one in every five affordable homes developed under the programme would be reserved for teachers.

The President said the government was now working to make it easier for teachers to acquire the houses by allowing them to pay through their salaries. "A dedicated team now supports teachers. We are also partnering with teachers' SACCOs to design financing that fits a teacher's income," Ruto said.

He encouraged teachers interested in owning homes to apply for their preferred units through the Boma Yangu platform. The check-off arrangement is expected to reduce the financial burden associated with upfront payments by spreading the cost of home ownership through regular salary deductions, with teachers' SACCOs also involved in developing financing products tailored to their members' incomes.

Ruto said the housing initiative was part of wider efforts to improve teachers' welfare and provide them with greater financial security, adding that teachers should have an opportunity to own homes after dedicating their careers to educating the country's children.

Attention now shifts to the implementation of the check-off system and the financing arrangements being developed between TSC, the Affordable Housing Board and teachers' SACCOs. The government is expected to provide further details on how teachers will qualify for the salary deductions, repayment periods and the specific affordable housing projects available to them.
