President William Ruto has assured teachers that the long-awaited Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) will be finalised within the next two weeks, giving teachers renewed hope of an improved framework for career advancement.
Speaking while addressing teachers during World Teachers' Day celebrations at the Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi, the President said the CPG finalisation would be undertaken within two weeks, in line with the assurance given by the Chairperson of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
The Career Progression Guidelines have been a major concern among teachers, with stakeholders calling for their speedy finalisation to address career stagnation and provide clearer pathways for professional advancement. The guidelines are currently among the key issues being pursued by teachers and their unions.
The President also called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to increase the number of teacher promotion slots from the current 34,000 to 50,000, saying the government was looking for additional resources that would enable the commission to fund the extra promotions.
TSC recently advertised 34,016 promotion vacancies, against the government's earlier commitment to an annual target of 50,000 promotions, leaving a gap of about 16,000 positions. Teachers have for years raised concerns over stagnation in various job groups, with unions pushing for increased promotion opportunities and faster implementation of measures aimed at improving career development.
The 2026 World Teachers' Day celebrations are being held under the theme "Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status, and Shaping Our Futures." Teachers will be keenly watching for concrete action on both the CPG timeline and the promotion-slot increase in the coming weeks.
