  • The Government says it released Sh86.1 billion to public schools across three terms this year.
  • Education funding has risen to Sh784.5 billion, alongside investment in classrooms and laboratory equipment.
President William Ruto has pledged to maintain the timely release of school capitation, saying the Government released Sh86.1 billion to public schools this year.
Speaking during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations at Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi on Monday, October 5, Mr Ruto said the funds were released before the beginning of each school term to support teaching and learning.
“A budget is only as good as the money that reaches the school,” he said.
According to the President, the Government released Sh44.2 billion in January, Sh23.4 billion in May and Sh18.5 billion in August.
The total amount released during the three periods was Sh86.1 billion.
Mr Ruto said the timely disbursement of capitation was a standing Government commitment and pledged that the practice would continue.
The announcement comes as schools implement Competency-Based Education (CBE), which has increased demand for teaching and learning resources.
Education budget increases
The President said Government investment in education had increased significantly, with the overall education budget rising from Sh526 billion in 2021/22 to Sh702 billion in 2025/26 and now to Sh784.5 billion in 2026/27.
He described education as the largest allocation to any sector in the national budget.
The President said the Government had also invested in school infrastructure, including the construction of more than 23,000 classrooms and the ongoing equipping of 1,600 laboratories.
The infrastructure projects are intended to support the transition to Junior and Senior School and provide facilities for learners taking different pathways under CBE.
Mr Ruto said the Government would continue providing the resources required by schools as it implements education reforms.
He linked timely capitation to the broader effort to strengthen the learning environment and ensure schools can provide essential services to learners.
Focus on timing and adequacy
The President’s commitment means schools are expected to continue receiving capitation through scheduled releases.
School managers and teachers have previously raised concerns over delays in Government funding, which can affect the ability of institutions to meet operational costs.
The Sh86.1 billion released across the three terms represents the Government’s stated investment in financing public schools this year.
