Nyamache Sub-County teachers have won the league cup in a highly contested tournament for educators in Kisii County, beating Marani Sub-County 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
The final was played at Nyamarambe Sports Ground in South Mugirango Constituency. It brought together more than 200 teachers from across the county, with teams from Marani Sub-County, Kisii Central, Nyamache Sub-County and others taking part.
The match kept fans on edge. Marani took an early lead, and Nyamache equalised in the second half to force the game into penalties, where Nyamache won 5-4
The winners were awarded a trophy, uniforms and a cash prize, and all the participating teams were recognised for their sportsmanship.
The match was graced by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, who praised teachers for forging unity in the region regardless of their political affiliations.

"Education does not know a child whose parent belongs to which party. You teachers, do great work to bridge this gap through your profession," he said.

Mr Osoro promised to consult colleagues and the county government to support the event so that it can be held annually among teachers in the county, and even extended to other parts of the country as a tool for unity.
He said sports and music are among the most powerful tools for uniting communities across ethnic, political and social divides. Sports, he said, build teamwork, discipline and mutual respect, while music and cultural activities bring people together in celebration of shared identity. Such tournaments, he added, promote physical wellness and strengthen national cohesion, peace and understanding among communities.
The MP challenged teachers to keep nurturing talent among learners through sports and music, saying co-curricular activities are critical in shaping all-round citizens. He pledged to support the construction of better sports facilities in schools in the constituency.
Kisii Branch Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Executive Secretary Abel Keyanchui said the union will continue to unite teachers so that they can serve the child well and fight for teachers' welfare.
He said teachers play a big role in shaping the destiny of a country's economy, and stressed the importance of their holistic welfare. KUPPET, he said, remains committed to defending teachers' rights, improving their working conditions and championing quality education for all learners. A motivated teacher, he said, is key to producing a well-rounded learner and building a productive nation.

"A teacher is the engine of the country's development. When we fight for better pay, better medical cover, fair promotions and better working conditions, we are not just fighting for teachers; we are fighting for the future of our children and the economy of this country," Mr Keyanchui said.

He called for unity among teachers across Kisii County, saying that divisions weaken their bargaining power. He urged teachers to remain members of the union and to take part actively in its activities, including welfare and sports programmes that promote cohesion and mental wellness.
