Nandi County is stepping up investment in ECDE infrastructure, nutrition and learning materials as it seeks to improve early learning and increase enrolment.

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has pledged to deepen investment in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) as the county moves to improve the learning environment for young children.

Sang said his administration would continue upgrading ECDE infrastructure and supporting programmes that give learners a strong start to their education journey.

Speaking during the commissioning of a newly constructed ECDE classroom at St Thomas Kapkoros ECDE Centre, the governor described early childhood education as a crucial foundation for the development of children and the county at large.

“We must give our children the best possible foundation because this is where their education journey begins,” Sang said.

Infrastructure and learner welfare

He said the county was prioritising the construction and rehabilitation of ECDE classrooms to provide learners with safe and child-friendly spaces while easing pressure on existing facilities.

Sang noted that the investment went beyond putting up buildings, saying the county was laying the groundwork for the future development of its human capital.

“We are not just putting up buildings, we are investing in the future of our children and the future of this county,” he said.

The governor said the county was also rolling out interventions to boost enrolment and keep children in ECDE centres, including initiatives aimed at improving their nutritional welfare.

He stressed that proper nutrition was essential for young learners to remain attentive and participate fully in classroom activities.

Sang called on parents to take a more active role by ensuring children of ECDE age are enrolled and attend school consistently.

“Education is a shared responsibility. The county government can provide infrastructure, but parents must also ensure that their children are brought to school and supported,” he said.

He further urged residents to safeguard the newly established facilities and protect public investments from vandalism and destruction.

Extending quality learning facilities

The governor said the county would complement infrastructure development by providing ECDE centres with suitable furniture and learning materials.

He also emphasised the need to extend quality learning facilities to rural areas, saying children should not be disadvantaged because of where they live.

Beyond academic skills, Sang challenged ECDE teachers to nurture children’s creativity, confidence, discipline and social development, noting that these attributes were essential in shaping well-rounded learners.

He said the county would continue consulting communities when planning education projects to ensure resources are directed to areas with the greatest needs.

Sang described the new classroom at St Thomas Kapkoros as a significant boost to the centre, saying it would create a more conducive learning environment for the children.

He assured residents that ECDE and learner welfare would remain key areas of focus for his administration as the county seeks to strengthen education from the earliest stage.

The governor also called on parents, teachers and local leaders to work together in supporting ECDE programmes, saying collaboration would be critical in turning county investments into meaningful improvements in learning.
