Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Makueni Branch Chairman Erastus Kimetu has decried poor parenting, saying many parents have neglected their role in disciplining children.
Speaking at a burial at Mituvu, Kako Ward in Makueni Constituency, Kimetu said schools only offer teaching and very little in terms of discipline, noting that while the church contributes, the biggest responsibility lies with parents.
"It's strange how nowadays many parents have neglected their roles in the upbringing of their children. Paying fees without proper parenting amounts to nothing. It's high time we got serious with our children," he said.
Kimetu dismissed the notion by the Ministry of Education that teachers incite student strikes, terming such claims unacceptable.
"It is not time to settle scores with teachers. We teachers are there to teach," he said.
He reminded teachers to adhere to the code of ethics, and called on the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to promptly pay teachers contracted for national exams, accusing the council of hiding behind the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to intimidate teachers.
"We only mark our internal examinations for free because that is part of our job. Any other examination is a contract which must be paid promptly," Kimetu said.
