Shock and concern have gripped Nzambani Sub-County in Kitui County after a Junior Secondary School (JSS) teacher and his girlfriend, a student at Kitui Teachers Training College, were seriously injured in an alleged violent domestic incident that ended with their house being set on fire.
The two are receiving treatment at Kitui Level 4 Hospital following the incident, in which the teacher is alleged to have stabbed his girlfriend several times before turning the knife on himself and setting their house ablaze. According to reports, the woman sustained serious injuries to the head during the attack, while the teacher reportedly suffered a stab wound to the stomach before the fire broke out.

Neighbours who heard commotion from the house reportedly rushed to the scene and helped rescue the injured pair from the burning building before taking them to hospital. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and the motive behind the alleged attack has not been established. Investigators are expected to piece together what happened and determine the events that led to the violent confrontation. The male teacher is reportedly receiving treatment under police guard as investigations continue.

Renewed Concern Over Violence in Relationships

The incident has renewed concern over intimate-partner violence and the risk of domestic disagreements escalating into serious injuries or loss of life. It also highlights the importance of recognising warning signs of violence and seeking timely assistance when relationship conflicts become threatening, with families, trusted individuals and relevant support services able to play a role in helping people facing difficult situations access appropriate intervention.

However, the full circumstances of the Kitui incident remain subject to investigation, and the allegations against the teacher have not been determined in court. Authorities are expected to establish the sequence of events, the circumstances surrounding the fire and any other factors that may have contributed to the incident.
