Kenya is advocating for greater use of research, data and digital technologies in mediation to prevent conflicts, strengthen public trust and promote trade and investment across East Africa.
Principal Secretary for Science, Research and Innovation Shaukat Abdulrazak said evidence-based approaches and technological innovation were essential to improving mediation as countries in the region pursue deeper economic integration.
Speaking virtually during the first East Africa Annual Mediator Conference, held under the theme “Harnessing Research and Innovation to Strengthen Mediation, Peace and Sustainable Development in East Africa,” Abdulrazak called for a shift from reactive conflict resolution to proactive approaches that anticipate disputes and promote lasting peace.
He emphasised that mediation should be supported by reliable research, data-driven decision-making and digital tools to help stakeholders better understand disputes and develop effective, sustainable solutions.
According to Abdulrazak, effective mediation can play a critical role in resolving conflicts while strengthening public confidence, facilitating trade and investment, and promoting social cohesion across the region.
He noted that unresolved disputes could undermine trust and economic relationships at a time when East African countries are strengthening regional cooperation and integration.
The Principal Secretary said Kenya’s State Department for Science, Research and Innovation remained committed to supporting partnerships that translate research findings and innovative ideas into practical solutions for society.
He stressed that peace was fundamental to achieving justice, development and prosperity.
“Peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it is the foundation upon which justice, development and prosperity are built,” he said.
Abdulrazak urged stakeholders to embrace dialogue, collaboration and innovation in transforming disputes into opportunities for cooperation and sustainable development.
He said the integration of research and technology into mediation would help strengthen conflict resolution mechanisms and support long-term stability as East Africa advances its economic and development agenda.
