Shock and outrage have gripped Kapsowar Ward in Marakwet West, Elgeyo Marakwet County, after a six-year-old Pre-Primary 2 (PP2) pupil was allegedly defiled.
The child is receiving treatment in hospital in Iten, where she underwent surgery yesterday, according to reports.
Leaders and residents in the area have condemned the incident in the strongest terms, calling it a heinous act against an innocent child.
Child rights activist Viola Barsulai, who visited the child in hospital, urged security agencies in Elgeyo Marakwet to speed up investigations and ensure that the suspect is arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law
"My heart is shattered. I visited the girl, a six-year-old PP2 learner, at the hospital following a reported case of defilement. Our innocent little girl had to undergo surgery. This is heartbreaking," Ms Barsulai said.
She called on parents and community leaders to stay vigilant and monitor their children during the holiday to prevent such incidents. No child, she said, should suffer pain inflicted by adults who are supposed to protect them.
"All parents and guardians should remain extra vigilant about the safety of their children and report any suspicious individuals to the authorities," she added.
