Gilgal Academy in Kapsowar, Marakwet West, is mourning a Grade 3 pupil who died a week after being attacked by a stray dog on his way to school.
The learner, identified as Asbel, 9, was attacked early in the morning while heading to school, according to his family. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he was treated and later discharged.
The death has plunged the school community, fellow pupils and teachers into mourning, with many describing him as a bright and disciplined boy whose life was cut short with a whole future ahead of him.
Residents of Kapsowar town are calling on the relevant authorities to take urgent action to control stray dogs roaming the town and its surroundings. Resident Jasmine Chebet said the dogs pose a serious threat to children, especially as the long holiday begins and many children will be playing and moving about outside, often unsupervised.
"We urgently call upon the relevant authorities to take strict measures to control stray dogs in Kapsowar. These cases are becoming increasingly rampant, putting the lives of our school-going children at risk. No child should have to fear for their life while walking to school. Our children deserve safety and protection. Let us act before another life is lost," Chebet said.
Residents have urged the Elgeyo-Marakwet County Government and the Department of Veterinary Services to carry out a large-scale crackdown and vaccination exercise to prevent further tragedies.
