Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) officials in Bomet County have appealed to teachers, education stakeholders and members of the public to help raise Sh2.5 million for life-saving heart surgery for a two-year-old girl, Amelia Cherotich.
The campaign is led by Bomet KUPPET Branch Gender Secretary Sanguya, Bomet KUPPET Branch Secondary Secretary Nicodemus Ngeno and branch Vice-Chairman Kibet Samoei. The officials called for urgent support to help Amelia, the daughter of Salim Kosgei, a teacher at Chebilat Boys High School, access specialised treatment in India.
Doctors at Mater Hospital have recommended surgery abroad for the toddler, with the procedure expected to cost Sh2.5 million, according to the family's appeal.
Sanguya urged teachers and other well-wishers to stand with the family during the difficult period, saying collective support could help secure the treatment Amelia needs.
She appealed to education stakeholders to demonstrate solidarity with their colleague by contributing towards the medical expenses, noting that even small donations could make a difference when combined.
Sanguya also encouraged members of the public to share the appeal widely to reach more potential donors and help the family raise the required amount in time.
Ngeno called on teachers across the county and beyond to support the fundraising initiative, saying the education fraternity should rally behind one of its own when faced with a family medical emergency.
He urged well-wishers to contribute according to their ability and help ease the financial burden facing Kosgei as he seeks treatment for his daughter.
Officials emphasise unity and compassion
Samoei appealed to members of the public and education stakeholders to join the campaign, emphasising the importance of unity and compassion in helping the young girl access medical care.
He also urged Kenyans to spread the fundraising message through their networks to increase awareness and improve the chances of meeting the target.
Chebilat Boys High School has already contributed Sh200,000 towards the appeal, providing an initial boost to the campaign.
Contributions can be sent through M-Pesa to 0706225400, registered under the name Kipkirui Kosgei.
The organisers are calling on teachers, parents, friends and other well-wishers to support the initiative as the family seeks to raise the funds required for Amelia's surgery.
