Moi University mourns ex-VC and distinguished scholar Prof. Raphael Munavu

The Moi University community is in mourning following the death of eminent educationist and former Vice Chancellor Prof. Raphael M. Munavu, who passed away on April 26, 2026, in Nairobi.

In a statement issued on behalf of the University Council, Senate, management, staff, students, alumni and the wider university fraternity, Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut described Prof. Munavu as a transformative leader and one of Kenya’s most respected scholars, whose legacy will endure across generations.

He said that Prof. Munavu was widely credited with steering the expansion and strengthening of academic programmes at Moi University, ensuring alignment with national priorities and global trends. Under his leadership, the institution reinforced quality assurance systems, safeguarding academic standards and enhancing its credibility locally and internationally.

“He also played a pivotal role in strengthening governance structures, improving efficiency, accountability and overall institutional performance. His tenure saw significant investment in infrastructure to support teaching, learning and research, alongside the nurturing of a culture of scholarship and innovation among both staff and students.” Prof Kotut wrote

Through strategic partnerships with government, industry and international collaborators, Prof. Munavu opened new avenues for growth and elevated the university’s profile. He was equally committed to staff development and student welfare, fostering an academic environment grounded in professionalism, service and integrity.

Beyond his contributions at Moi University, Prof. Munavu served the nation with distinction in education reform, examinations management and the promotion of science and innovation. His influence extended across Kenya’s education sector, where he was widely respected for his expertise and dedication.

“As a University, we honour his life of service, integrity and intellectual distinction. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire future generations,” Prof. Kotut said in the statement.

The university community also drew comfort from scripture, citing Psalm 34:18, as it extended condolences to Prof. Munavu’s family, colleagues and friends.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
