- The Ministry of Education has opened secondary schools to National Registration Bureau officers for an ID registration exercise.
- Eligible students will access National ID registration services within their schools during the Third Term exercise.
- The programme runs until mid-October as schools also prepare for national examinations.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) has formally approved access by National Registration Bureau (NRB) officers to secondary schools across Kenya to facilitate the issuance of National Identity Cards to eligible students.
The decision, communicated through an official letter dated August 31, 2026, signed by Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa, CBS, follows an earlier request from the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services.
Registration officers will conduct the exercise between August 31 and October 16, 2026.
The registration window has been structured to take into account Third Term examinations and minimise disruption to learning and examination preparations.
Separate instructions have also been dispatched to Regional Directors of Education (RDEs) to facilitate access by registration officers to secondary schools across the country.
Schools to facilitate registration officers
The exercise will enable eligible students to access National ID registration services within their schools instead of having to leave their institutions to seek the services elsewhere.
The National Registration Bureau is responsible for identifying, registering and issuing National Identity Cards to Kenyan citizens aged 18 years and above.

The school-based exercise is expected to make the process more accessible to eligible secondary school students before they complete their studies and transition to tertiary education, training or the workforce.
